Lava Gravel Improves Drainage, Anchors Plants, and Enhances Root Zone Balance

Lava gravel is a naturally porous volcanic rock that enhances drainage, increases soil aeration, and supports long-term moisture regulation. This rugged, mineral-rich substrate improves the health and stability of your soil by introducing both airflow and structure—making it ideal for everything from succulent pots and tropical planters to closed terrariums and decorative top layers.

At Sybotanica, we select lava gravel with the perfect size and weight for indoor gardening. It arrives clean, pre-screened, and ready to use as a potting mix additive, surface mulch, or drainage layer in terrariums. Its bold appearance also makes it a beautiful, functional touch to top off potted plants.

A Mineral Powerhouse With Structural Strength

Unlike lightweight aggregates such as perlite or pumice, lava gravel offers real weight and long-lasting structure. This makes it perfect for stabilizing top-heavy plants or anchoring newly rooted cuttings that haven’t yet established themselves. Its coarse texture prevents soil compaction, ensuring your mix stays loose and breathable over time.

Core Benefits of Lava Gravel:

  • Supports root health with improved oxygen flow
  • Enhances moisture regulation by holding and releasing water gradually
  • Provides stable, heavy-weight support for tall or fragile plants
  • Serves as a long-term mineral substrate that won’t decompose
  • Increases pH subtly—ideal for plants that prefer alkaline-leaning conditions
  • Effective as a drainage layer, breathable base, or decorative top cover

Because it’s formed through volcanic activity, lava gravel contains a range of trace micronutrients like iron, magnesium, and calcium—essential for healthy root development and cellular function.

Pairing Lava Gravel With Worm Castings: Nutrient Synergy

On its own, lava gravel supplies key micronutrients, but these minerals aren’t immediately available to plants without biological support. That’s where natural & fresh worm castings come in. When used together, worm castings and lava gravel form a powerful duo:

  • Lava gravel slowly releases minerals into the soil over time
  • Worm castings provide beneficial microbes and enzymes that help convert these minerals into plant-available nutrients

This combination strengthens the root zone, boosts microbial activity, and creates a stable, balanced, and nutrient-rich environment that promotes vigorous, resilient plant growth.

Terrarium-Ready and Visually Striking

In closed systems like terrariums, lava gravel plays a dual role: functional and aesthetic. It serves as an excellent drainage layer beneath the soil, preventing root rot and pooling water, while also giving your terrarium a polished, natural look. Its porous stone structure ensures consistent airflow and water movement without introducing decay or mold.

In Terrariums, Lava Gravel:

  • Separates soil from standing water
  • Supports humidity regulation
  • Prevents anaerobic conditions at the base
  • Adds visual texture and contrast beneath or above the soil

It’s inert, odorless, and fully reusable—making it perfect for terrarium builds, repotting projects, and layered displays.

How to Use Lava Gravel in Your Setup

  • In soil: Mix 2-5% lava gravel into potting soil to improve drainage and structure
  • With worm castings: Combine 1 part castings with 4–5 parts soil and 0.5 part lava gravel for a balanced, biologically active mix
  • In terrariums: Create a 1-2 cm drainage base layer below your substrate
  • As mulch: Use as a top layer to retain moisture, suppress fungus gnats, and reduce soil compaction

Because it doesn’t break down, you won’t need to replace it during each repot. Just rinse and reuse.

Sybotanica’s Take: Structure Meets Bioactivity

At Sybotanica, we love using lava gravel as a tool for balance—giving soil the structure it needs while leaving space for organic amendments to work their magic. When paired with worm castings, it becomes part of a closed-loop system where minerals meet microbes, and roots gain access to the full spectrum of nutrients they need to thrive.

It’s just one more way we help you build better soil from the ground up—clean, stable, and alive.

Socially responsible production

At Sybotanica we not only want to make plants happy, but people happy as well. In our production team we exclusively hire people with a distance from the workforce, and help them rehabilitate to the normal working life.

Take Peter for example:

Peter has been with Sybotanica since the 1st hour, and has now been promoted to head of production & a permanent contract! Where he was the first employee, he now manages a team of 3 production workers.

What makes this achievement even more impressive is that Peter achieved all this with only 10% visibility! 🕶️ With a few minor adjustments to his working environment, Peter is able to perform his job 100%.

Peter has now been through two moves and knows all the ins & outs of Sybotanica. He can even feel by the potting soil which variety it is. That's quite a challenge with 16 different mixes!

We are confident that Peter will keep production running smoothly in the coming years too! 💪

FAQ

How to use lava gravel in your soil mix
Lava Gravel can be a wonderful additive to your soil mix. It enhances drainage, which is benefical to help reduce overwatering or root rot.
Due to its higher pH levels, it can also be added to your soil mix to increase the alkalinity of the soil.

Lava gravel as a fertilizer
You can boost your soil's nutrients by mixing lava gravel and worm castings.
Worm castings contain mycorrhiza, which is a naturally occurring fungi. This fungus works in harmony with the plant roots.
It helps to extract minerals from the soil and share them with the plant. This makes water and nutrient stress much less likely.
And, in return, the fungi receives sugars from the roots.

Lava gravel has a lot of the minerals that mycorrhiza love! By combining these two components, you optimize this exchange.
You don’t need much gravel; 10 to 50 grams per 10L of soil is enough.

Have a different question? Get in contact

  • What:

Porous, clean lava gravel for improved structure and nutrients

  • How much:

Add 2-5% to your SYBASoil mix as a non-complete fertiliser. Add 10-20% as a structure improver

    Almost all houseplants

Why THIS Lava Gravel compared to others?

Good lava gravel enhances soil aeration and drainage while providing stable moisture retention, making it ideal for a variety of houseplants, especially those requiring well-draining soils.

Origin of our Lava Gravel

Our lava gravel is sourced from Germany at the Volcanic Eifel. Lava gravel is a purely natural product. It's low in salt and free of harmful substances.

The gravel is sourced with a very short supply chain, and the materials are abundant. Harvesting lava gravel has a very low environmental impact.
